I love my characters, good or bad. I let them tell me what they want to do although of course I always have the final say. I have learned over the years that, for me, planning a novel in too great a detail before I begin is a mistake because my characters never play along with that. In Olivia’s Garden I had made up my mind that at the three-quarter point I would kill off one of my characters in an accident. Two people would be involved but even as I was writing the scene it became clear that the character I had in mind was going to survive at the expense of the other. It was a complete surprise to me but it worked. It is weird as if the character was actually talking to me and pleading to be saved.
